Finding pillow creases in your face can be a bit alarming. You wake up in the morning and discover a brand new deep wrinkle that was not there yesterday. Pillow increases occur as a result of sleeping on a wrinkled pillow case or where skin is pulled and creased. Fortunately it's not a permanent wrinkle and will smooth itself out within a couple of hours. But who has a couple of hours to wait for wrinkles to disappear when in a rush to get to work?

When you sleep the skin is busy doing most of its regeneration. By pressing your facial skin against the pillow in the same position for hours, proper blood circulation can be impeded. This is one reason why people wake up with swollen faces and those bothersome pillow creases. In addition, the skin may actually look red and irritated too. To get rid of a pillow crease quickly, you can wash your face in warm water and then rub in a moisturizer to restore skin suppleness.

To prevent pillow creases, the obvious solution is to sleep on your back if possible. If you must sleep on your side, use a silk pillowcase which minimizes pillow creases. Also, make sure you use a moisturizer regularly in order to keep your skin supple and able to bounce back quickly. Though pillow creases are not permanent wrinkles, they can cause skin problems over a period of time. Permanent wrinkles in the face are caused by collagen degradation due to aging and repeated muscle use in the same way, i.e. frowning or squinting can create wrinkles between the eyes. Repeated pillow creases can cause skin problems in a similar manner.

The best approach is to prevent pillow creases from the start. You can do this by sleeping on your back, using silk pillowcases, and just as importantly, applying a night time moisturizer that protects the skin.
